Claude Monet (1840–1926)
Claude Monet was more than a founder of Impressionism—he was its heartbeat. Born in Paris and raised in Le Havre, Monet spent his life chasing light across water, through fog, and over fields of wildflowers. His canvases did not simply depict landscapes; they captured fleeting moments in time, painted with such sensitivity that nature seemed to breathe within them.
Monet’s artistic revolution lay in his ability to see the world not as it was, but as it felt. He painted outdoors to immerse himself in the natural world. With bold color and loose, vibrant brushwork, he recorded the ever-changing effects of light and atmosphere.
Among his works, the Water Lilies became his lifelong obsession. It is said that Monet created more than 250 paintings in this series, capturing the delicate play of light and reflection on the tranquil surface of his beloved pond. Working with a luminous and ever-changing palette—shades of green, blue, violet, pink, and countless subtle variations—he portrayed the water lilies in a range of moods and atmospheres. Each canvas offers a meditative glimpse into his inner world, where time slows, and beauty drifts just beneath the surface.
Claude Monet died in 1926 in Giverny, where his gardens—planted and painted by the artist himself—still bloom as a living masterpiece. His legacy endures in every brushstroke that dares to capture light not as it is, but as it lives.
